ThermiEyes®: An Innovative Treatment for Dry Eyes

We are proud to now offer ThermiEyes at our Goodlettsville, TN, optometrist's office for safe, quick, and painless relief from the symptoms of dry eyes. The innovative and non-surgical procedure relies on the radiofrequency energy of ThermiSmooth technology. During a consultation at our office, Dr. Walter Choate can examine your eyes and determine if ThermiEyes are appropriate for your particular case.

What Is ThermiEyes?

Dry eye is often the result of a condition called Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), which results from plugged-up or malfunctioning meibomian glands. The ThermiEyes system can relieve the consequent effects by delivering constant radiofrequency energy deep into the skin. The resulting heat can liquefy the oily substance that often prevents evaporation of the eye's tear film. For many patients, this heating process improves gland function.

A single session usually only lasts 10 to 15 minutes per eye, meaning you can easily schedule appointments during your lunch break. To begin treatment, one of our skilled staff members will apply a cold gel to the area around your eye to prep the skin. Then, a special handheld device is moved along the treatment area in a small, circular motion. The device is designed to adjust the amount of radiofrequency energy applied based on the temperature of your skin, which is continuously measured in real time. This feature ensures that your skin is never heated beyond a safe level.

While it is important to remember that no single treatment effectively treats dry eyes in every patient, ThermiEyes can provide considerable relief for many.

Following your treatment, you will be free to return to work or to resume normal activities. There is no need to avoid wearing contacts or makeup in the days after the procedure. Side effects are rare, although some patients do experience mild redness or swelling immediately after undergoing the procedure. However, these usually resolve quickly.

Most patients require three to five treatments every two weeks over a period of three to six months. The exact number will vary from patient to patient.

What Are the Benefits of ThermiEyes Over Other Dry Eye Treatments?

Patients who undergo ThermiEyes treatments can enjoy:

  • Short treatment sessions
  • Virtually no recovery time
  • Minimal risk of side effects
  • Clinically-proven results

A study through the American Academy of Optometry found that treatment with ThermiEyes resulted in measurable improvements in dry eye symptoms that lasted for several weeks.

Am I a Candidate?

Many patients are good candidates for the procedure. Dr. Choate will first conduct a series of tests to determine the cause of your dry eye. Our Goodlettsville practice offers three advanced tests for diagnosis:

  • Slit lamp exam
  • Schirmer's test
  • LipiScan

If MGD is found to be a potential cause of your dry eye symptoms, you may be a good candidate for ThermiEyes treatments. If there is another condition causing your dry eye symptoms, however, Dr. Choate may recommend one of multiple alternative treatments.
