Doctors Recommend Regular Eye Exams to Promote Your Long-Term Vision & Overall Health

Regular eye exams are the best way to diagnose and treat health issues at their earliest stages and before the onset of symptoms. Based on your age, background, and other risk factors, doctors recommend that you schedule an eye exam annually or more frequently.

General Population

Everyone should undergo regular eye exams and you should schedule them more frequently as you get older. Eye professionals generally recommend eye exams every one to two years depending on age and medical conditions.

At-Risk Individuals

If you have a high risk of vision problems, you may need more frequent eye exams. For example, if you have diabetes, we will typically recommend at least one visit per year because of the increased risk of eye diseases.

Protecting Your Vision Becomes Increasingly Important With Age

Eye exams become increasingly important as we age. Through regular exams, Dr. Choate can identify eye diseases and treat them before they permanently damage your vision.

In particular, regular eye exams will help to diagnose glaucoma. Without routine care, this disease will often go undiagnosed until it causes major vision loss.

In addition, with age, you are more susceptible to vision deterioration, such as nearsightedness and farsightedness. At your visits, we can monitor your eyesight, updating your lens strength as needed.

We Accept Insurance and Financing

Eye exams are essential for maintaining your overall health and well-being. That's why our office accepts the following payment methods to help you afford eye care treatment:

Insurance

We accept most insurance plans at our eye care practice. If you have vision insurance, your comprehensive eye exam will likely be covered. Our office staff can consult with your provider to see how much coverage you will receive, then provide you with a quote for any out-of-pocket costs.

Financing

If you don't have insurance, we accept financing through CareCredit®. CareCredit offers monthly financing plans at low to no interest rates. This way, you can receive essential eye care without exceeding your monthly budget.

Dr. Choate and everyone on staff were so friendly and helpful. He did a test for misalignment of my eyes that no other optometrist had ever mentioned to me before. It turns out that I have some misalignment and he prescribed specific lens to help with it. They also have a really good frames selection.

What Happens During an Eye Exam?

Because our eye exams are comprehensive, they usually last about one hour. A comprehensive eye exam consists of several tests performed with state-of-the-art technology. These assessments include:

Each comprehensive eye exam usually lasts about one hour and includes a variety of tests.
Each comprehensive eye exam usually lasts about one hour and includes a variety of tests.

Visual Acuity Test

Using an eye chart, your optometrist can ascertain the sharpness of your vision. Then he can determine whether you need corrective lenses or an updated prescription.

Refraction Test

If we decide that you need glasses or contacts, we may perform a refraction test. During this process, you will look through various lenses to find the ones that give you the sharpest vision.

Visioffice Imaging Technology

We can also use Visioffice® imaging technology to determine the right lens prescription using precise, digital images.

Color Blindness Test

Because color blindness can sometimes point to underlying vision conditions, your eye doctor will use a special test to evaluate your color perception.

Cover Test

Covering each of your eyes one at a time, your doctor can detect abnormal movements when you have to focus on distant objects.

Ocular Motility Test

Similarly, your eye doctor may evaluate your ability to track moving objects with your eyes only. Difficulties in this area may make it difficult to read, play sports, and engage in similar activities.

Depth Perception Test

Providing special eyewear, much like 3-D glasses, Dr. Choate will ask you to pick out the nearest objects in a printed pattern.

Slit-Lamp Exam

During a slit-lamp exam, your doctor can obtain a 3-D view of your retina, cornea, and lens. This type of screening will help him diagnose structural abnormalities and damage.

Glaucoma Test

Glaucoma causes intraocular pressure, eventually putting pressure on your optic nerve. During a glaucoma test, your doctor will check your intraocular pressure by directing a gentle puff of air at your eye. Alternatively, he may use a tonometry test to perform the same function.

Visual Field Test

Looking at your peripheral vision, Dr. Choate can test for blind spots, a common symptom of glaucoma.
