ThermiEyes® for Dry Eyes By Walter Choate on July 19, 2022

woman with clear eyesWhen the weather is dry or when smoke, dust, or allergens are in the air, people are likely to experience dry itchy eyes. In these cases symptoms are temporary, but millions of Americans suffer from a persistent condition called keratoconjunctivitis sicca, more commonly known as dry eyes. Dry eyes cause a number of uncomfortable symptoms, which may include redness, itching or burning, and sensitivity to light.

At Choate Eye Associates, individuals in NashvilleTNGoodlettsville, TN, HendersonTN, and surrounding areas can consider ThermiEyes® treatment for dry eyesThermiEyes addresses the cause of dry eyes to provide quick, painless, and effective relief from dry eye symptoms.

ThermiEyes Candidates

Before proceeding with ThermiEyes treatment, it is important to determine if patients are ideal candidates for this procedure. ThermiEyes specifically addresses cases of dry eyes that are caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction, or MGD.

MGD is a malfunction of the meibomian glands, which are the glands that produce and release oil onto the tear film. Oil prevents the water layer on the eye from evaporating too quickly. If these glands malfunction or become clogged, sufficient oil is not released, so water on the surface of the eye evaporates quickly and can result in dry eyes. Dr. Choate performs a series of tests to determine if MGD is the likely cause of dry eyes. If so, ThermiEyes should be an effective treatment for the patient.

ThermiEyes Treatment

ThermiEyes treatment is fast, painless, and safe. The procedure takes about 10 to 15 minutes per eye, so it can easily fit into even the busiest of schedules. Prior to starting treatment we prep the skin around the eye by applying a cold gel. We then begin to use the handheld ThermiEyes device. The device is moved in a circular motion along the treatment area. The device delivers radiofrequency energy deep into the skin.

The energy creates heat that can liquefy oils to release blockages in the meibomian glands. For maximum effectiveness, ThermiEyes treatment requires a series of sessions. Most patients undergo three to five sessions every two weeks for a span of three to six months.

Side Effects and Recovery

Patients do not require any downtime or significant recovery following ThermiEyes treatment. Individuals can resume all usual activities immediately following treatment. This includes returning to work, exercising, wearing makeup, and putting in contact lenses. Most patients experience no side effects of treatment either, although it is possible for mild swelling or redness to develop. Any redness or inflammation should resolve very quickly.
