Treatments for Astigmatism By deborah on October 21, 2013

Nashville Astigmatism TreatmentsAstigmatism is a common vision problem that causes blurred or distorted vision. Most often the result of an irregularly shaped cornea, this condition prevents light from being properly focused on the retina. For patients with astigmatism, this results in blurry vision at both near and far distances. While most patients have some degree of astigmatism, not all patients suffer to the degree that everyday vision is impaired. For those that do suffer from advanced astigmatism, the optometrists at Choate Eye Associates can help. We discuss with our Nashville patients available astigmatism treatments, such as glasses, contact lenses, and LASIK eye surgery, so that each of our patients can choose a treatment that best fits their unique needs, wants, and lifestyle choices.

Glasses

Most cases of astigmatism can be effectively corrected through the use of corrective lenses. Glasses offer vision correction that is non-invasive and effective. Many patients choose glasses because they can correct vision while allowing patients to express their unique sense of style. At our optical boutique, we offer a wide range of fashionable frames that allow our patients to both look and see their best. The lenses that we offer utilize the most advanced technology, allowing patients the option of progressive lenses, lenses that adjust to different light conditions, and lenses that reduce glare. We also use VisiOffice image technology to ensure that patients are accurately measured so that the glasses they receive will fit comfortably and securely.

Contact Lenses

While glasses are great for some patients, many prefer a more discreet alternative. For these patients, contact lenses offer the effectiveness of corrective lenses without being noticeable to others. Contact lenses allow patients to discreetly and effectively correct vision while avoiding the risks of laser surgery. Technology for contact lenses has continued to advance, allowing us to offer patients contact lenses that meet their unique visual needs. Some of the types of contact lenses available include disposable lenses, multifocal lenses, hybrid lenses, and toric lenses (which are ideal for patients with a high degree of astigmatism). As an FDA investigator and consultant for contact lenses, Dr. Choate can ensure that patients are receiving safe and effective contact lenses that are also comfortable and conveniently fit in with each patient’s unique lifestyle.

LASIK

LASIK offers surgical correction of astigmatism (as well as nearsightedness and farsightedness) and is an option for those patients who do not believe that glasses or contact lenses will fit into their lifestyle or for those whose vision cannot be adequately corrected with prescription lenses. While LASIK has been proven to be a safe and effective treatment for astigmatism, we only recommend laser vision correction to those patients whose lifestyle and visual needs are truly suited to the procedure. While pre- and post-surgical care is available here at Choate Eye Associates, we team with local refractive surgeons who perform the surgical procedure to ensure that those of our patients who are candidates receive care of the highest quality.
